AmBank has revealed that the long-awaited Apple Pay will finally be coming to Malaysia, though it may not have been on purpose. This comes after several recent incidents feeding the rumour mill that the payment method would be landing here after all this time.

The page isn’t listed on AmBank’s website yet, but if you go to the same URL seen in the SMS sent by the bank (as shared by Lowyat.NET Forumer ken8888 previously), the webpage reveals that Apple Pay is indeed coming to Malaysia. While we were able to access the announcement page earlier, all the information on the page seem to be gone now – leading us to speculate that the bank may have jumped the gun on this one.

The page confirms that it will work specifically with AmBank’s credit card/-i, but no mention of whether or not it will support the bank’s debit card. It also includes two unlisted YouTube videos instructing users on how to use Apple Pay through Face ID and Touch ID. Unlike PayWave transactions using physical cards, contactless transactions using Apple’s system will have no limit.

Additionally, there is a video (now set to private , unfortunately) showing customers how to add their cards to the Wallet app but as per checking, the ability to add cards is still not available for us. This means that in an upcoming iOS update, Malaysia iPhone users should be able to finally use that “+” button in the Wallet app.

AmBank also details cashback rewards for those who add and use their AmBank credit card with Apple Pay. Confusingly enough, it is advertised as a RM50 cashback capped at RM20. Those who purchase a new Apple device with an AmBank credit card and use it through Apple Pay will also be rewarded with a RM50 cashback on their first transaction.

Notably, Malaysia is still not listed as one of the countries with Apple Pay support on Apple’s website. While it’s still a mystery on how many local banks will be supporting the payment system when it launches, one thing for certain now, thanks to AmBank’s assumed blunder, is that its launch is forthcoming.
