Cops on the hunt for donation box thief in Kluang

KLUANG: Police are looking for a man who was caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) stealing from a surau donation box.

Kluang OCPD Low Hang Seng said the recording showed the suspect, who drove a grey Proton Saga, entering the surau in Taman Puteri here where he took the money inside the box at around 9.30pm on Jan 15.

“One of the surau congregation reported the incident after checking the CCTV recording on Jan 17 and saw the man’s actions.

“We are looking for the suspect and the vehicle but the car registration number was unclear,” he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 20).

The case was being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carried a jail term of up to 10 years and a possible jail term for the first offence while second offenders and above face imprisonment and possible caning or fine.

The CCTV recording had been making rounds on social media.

ACP Low also advised the public not to speculate about the situation that could cause a panic and to leave the investigation to the police.
