THE number of COVID-19 positive cases worldwide has reached 2.54 million as at early Wednesday morning.

According to Johns Hopkins University's data, more than 80,000 new cases of infection were reported within the last 24 hours.

Spain has joined the United States (US) in a group of countries with COVID-19 positive cases exceeding 200,000.

The US remains the worst affected country with over 814,000 cases, with a latest increase of more than 36,000 new cases.

This was followed by Spain with a total of 204,000 cases with an increase of over 4,000 new cases.

Italy and France meanwhile recorded 183,000 cases and 156,000 cases respectively while Germany and the United Kingdom were two countries with positive numbers exceeding 100,000 when they had 148,000 and 130,000 new cases, respectively.

Meanwhile, the total number of COVID-19 patients who have recovered from the virus now exceeded 678,000 worldwide.
