Covid-19: Myanmar man dies in police custody after testing positive

PETALING JAYA: Another death in custody has been reported, this time in Kelantan, linked to a Covid-19 positive detainee.

Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Datuk Azri Ahmad, in a statement, said the suspect was arrested on Feb 25 in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.

“A Myanmar man was arrested under the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not possessing valid documents. A preliminary test showed that he was Covid-19 positive and he was sent to the Tanah Merah hospital for treatment.

“On Feb 26, the man was pronounced dead, at 2.22am. The cause of death was due to Covid-19,” he said on Saturday (Feb 26).

The department’s Criminal Investigation Unit on Death In Custody is currently investigating the matter.
