Dr Wee, Mohd Ali Rustam discuss road safety, expansion of Batu Berendam Airport

PETALING JAYA: Road safety and the expansion of the Batu Berendam Airport were among the issues discussed between Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong and Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam during a meeting on Tuesday (Aug 23) evening.

The Transport Minister said that he and Mohd Ali had also discussed the possibility of a High Speed Rail (HSR) project in Melaka’s ongoing drive for development.

“I met Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka, Tuan Yang Terutama (TYT) Tun Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam today.

“Among the topics discussed included the road safety campaign, the HSR project which will surely drive development in Melaka and the expansion of the Batu Berendam Airport,” Dr Wee said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

“TYT Tun, who was a former deputy transport minister, touched on the importance of the Road Safety Council and emphasised the need to expand the road safety campaign to the state and regional level.

“I gave Tun an overview of MOT’s plans to reduce road fatalities by 50% come 2030,” said the MCA president.

Dr Wee added that Mohd Ali brought up Sweden as a country worth emulating when it comes to road safety procedures.

On Aug 15, the Transport Minister had received a courtesy call from Swedish Ambassador to Malaysia Dr Joachin Bergström at the Transport Ministry in Putrajaya.

During the meeting, Dr Wee and Bergström reaffirmed both countries’ goal to strengthen cooperations in relation to transport and road safety.

Earlier today, Dr Wee also paid a visit to Melaka’s oldest driving school, MSDC Sdn Bhd, where he spoke to staff and obtained their input on ways to improve driving courses.

He also took the opportunity to have a closer look at the driving examination process.
