Huawei today has announced a huge group of new devices that are meant for the markets within the Asia Pacific region. Among them are the MateBook 16s and MateBook D16 which are now available for pre-order immediately in Malaysia.

In general, the MateBook 16s is a much more premium model than the MateBook D16 even though both models feature a 16-inch display which is something that you might be able to guess from their names. For starters, the MateBook 16s comes with a touch display that has a native resolution of 2520 x 1680 and Delta E’s colour accuracy value of under 1.

The IPS display panel on the MateBook 16s also has a maximum brightness level of 300nits alongside a 1500:1 contrast ratio. An Intel Evo certified device, the 1.99kg Windows 11 laptop comes standard with an Intel Core i7-12700H processor which also features the integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics.

In Malaysia, the 16s is available only in one configuration which inclusive of 16GB RAM and 1TB solid state drive while Huawei noted that this laptop also has 54W TDP high performance mode.  Completing its general hardware specs is an 84Wh battery that is being paired with a 90W SuperCharge charger although Huawei did not reveal the battery life and charging time for the laptop.

While still featuring a 16-inch display, the IPS screen on the MateBook D16 does not come with a touch panel and has a more modest resolution at Full HD (1920 X 1200). This laptop can be configured with either Intel Core i5-12450H or Core i7-12700H alongside up to 16GB of RAM but only has 512GB solid state drive across entire SKUs.

Furthermore, the laptop’s high performance mode maxed out at 40W TDP which is much lower than the 16s. The MateBook D16 also has a smaller 60Wh battery capacity and is accompanied by a 65W SuperCharger charger instead of 90W.

Despite this, the D16 does have something unique in the form of the Metaline antenna technology that apparently helped increase the efficiency of its wireless network signal by 56% which subsequently resulted in a more stable and smoother connection. According to Huawei, it is the first MateBook laptop to be fitted with the new tech.

Meanwhile, Huawei noted that the keyboard on both models has a 1.5mm travel distance. Interesting enough, the company decided to implement a numeric pad into D16 but not on 16s although this does allow the latter to occupy the space with a pair of front-firing surround speakers.

Both of these 16-inch MateBook laptops also feature a 1080p wide angle webcam that comes with its own suite of features called AI Camera that generally works with any apps that utilize the camera. This even includes the built-in camera app inside Windows 11.

Accessible through the Camera section of the Huawei Control Panel, users can set their own virtual background while the FollowCam feature would track users’ movements and dynamically adjust the image output so that they will always be in the centre. There is also the Eye Contact functionality that automatically adjusts to users’ line of vision to make them appear as if they are looking at the camera instead of the screen which Huawei said can provide a more “natural” video call experience.

Naturally, both 16s and D16 are part of the Huawei Super Device ecosystem as well. This means that users can utilize them with other Huawei devices such as MatePad tablets, phones, MateView monitors, and many more.

Depending on specific devices, they can easily drag and drop files between devices as well as mirror or control them directly from the 16s and D16. They can also turn select MatePad tablets into a secondary display complete with the ability to utilize the tablets’ inking functionalities.
