vivo has released the first smartphone series with the ZEISS 1-inch main camera in Malaysia, jointly developed by vivo and ZEISS: the vivo X90 series. Combining their knowledge in optics, the two brands have collaborated in multiple dimensions – from optical devices and coating processes to colour algorithms and ZEISS classic lens effects – bringing a better imaging experience to millions of consumers. With the X90 series, the strategic partnership and joint innovation between the two brands goes to another level, resulting in a new ZEISS Professional Imaging System.

This time, vivo and ZEISS worked together to make significant enhancements in order to give smartphone consumers exceptional photography performance by harnessing the capabilities of the 1-inch sensor, apertures and stabilisations.
Vivid, Purer Images
When it comes to cameras, the layman may jump to the conclusion that more lenses equal better photo quality. However, this isn’t always the case. While more lenses can definitely improve image effects, oftentimes, they can cause reflections and scatterings between lenses, resulting in unwanted ghosting and flares in photos.
But with the ZEISS 1-inch main camera, this isn’t an issue. Coming with a 1G+7P lens structure, the X90 Pro has a total of eight lenses within its main camera. One piece utilises high-transmittance glass, while the other seven lenses feature ALC coating, an upgraded version of ZEISS T* coating. This reduces any reflection between the lenses, allowing you to produce purer images without any unwanted effects like ghosting.
When it comes to photography, sensors are the heart and soul of image perfection. Larger sensors can increase light sensitivity and significantly enhance the shooting experience in challenging situations like dim or low light.
The X90 Pro uses the industry’s largest 1-inch IMX989 sensor to date, in addition to its f/1.75 large aperture and 3.2μm large pixel (4-in-1). Its glass lens diameter has been increased by 16% compared to its predecessors to fit the ZEISS 1-inches’ large sensor. This allows for more light intake per pixel when photos are taken, improving image details and creating brighter, purer and more breathtaking nighttime photography.
vivo’s new-gen GNV sensor’s photosensitive area has increased by a whopping 77%, with its light intake and photosensitive capacity going up by 43%! It also comes with AI noise reduction, eliminating the vast majority of noise in photos and ensuring that your nighttime photography is crisp, clean and bright. Paired with vivo’s 4K night video mode, the vivo X90 Pro produces videos and images with better resolution, along with upgraded algorithms that help enhance your images and videos as a whole.
An Imaging Chip, Born To Rule
The hardware of the vivo V2 chip has been improved and redesigned. The totally on-chip memory hierarchy, Al acceleration unit, and picture processing subsystem have all been completely reworked, starting with the chip’s base technology.
High-speed computational imaging is made possible by vivo’s professional imaging processor, which works in conjunction with the phone’s main chip to enhance both performance and user interface. Frame insertion, real-time Al noise reduction, and HDR are all made possible by the ground-breaking Al ISP low-latency image processing architecture, which also offers MEMC frame interpolation and Al Noise Reduction.
It’s an integrated circuit chip that’s entirely unique and has singular specifications. Professionally-customised chips, as opposed to general-purpose or semi-general-purpose computing chips like CPUs and DSPs, have the properties of high performance, low latency, and low power consumption while performing specific tasks.
vivo Versus SLR Cameras
To illustrate the photographic prowess of the vivo X90 Pro, we conducted test shots using an DSLR camera, to compare the results with the vivo X90 Pro’s.
But first, let’s lay down the specs for both the phone and the camera:
- Phone (main camera): 50 MP, IMX989 (1-inch), f/1.75, 1.6 μm (single), 23mm equivalent focal length 1G+7P AOA OIS
- SLR camera: 24.2 MP, 11fps, ISO 100 – 3200
By utilising the phones 1-inch main camera which we’ve already talked about; no matter how many tiny, brilliant lights there are on the tower, the X90 Pro is able to capture every detail without seeming overexposed; in contrast, the details in the shot with the DSLR camera appears blurry and overexposed.
Thanks to the ZEISS T* Coating on the phone, it can enhance visible light transmission rate, improve image quality and accurately reproduce the colours of the object, while reducing light reflectivity to avoid negative effects such as ghosting and stray light.
The X90 Pro nevertheless manages to capture all the fine details on all the subjects in the photo, including on the KLCC tower, despite the fact that it is farther away and in front of another structure with some lights. However, the tower is noticeably overexposed when taken with a DSLR camera, and the lights on the building and tower simply appear hazy.
With the phones VCS (vivo Camera-Bionic Spectrum) which restores the images colours by reproducing them with remarkable precision, the dog image captured by the X90 Pro is unmistakably livelier, almost as if the image is an exact duplicate of what we would see physically with our own eyes. The dog’s details, such as its fur and eyes, are also vibrant and distinct. The dog in the DSLR photo appears washed out.
We promised outstanding performance by calling it the industry’s best 50MP IMX ultra-sensing portrait lens and vivo delivered exactly that. The talent is more vibrant and lifelike in the photograph taken with the X90 Pro, with the details on her attire still standing out. Of course, the colour, lights, and details on the tower and building are still visible even with the bokeh effect. Also keep in mind that no post-editing is done to either photo, and as you can clearly see, a quick snap with the phone can immediately guarantee remarkable results in any environment.
