King, Queen attend UPSI’s 100th anniversary celebration

TANJONG MALIM: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah graced a dinner in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) at Dewan Tuanku Canselor UPSI here Thursday (Dec 1).

His Majesty, accompanied by the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, arrived at 8.50pm, greeted by the UPSI management and more than 600 guests.

At the ceremony, His Majesty also launched a commemorative stamp in collaboration with Pos Malaysia as well as two special edition coins in collaboration with Bank Negara Malaysia.

The special stamp has a unique design featuring an illustration of the Suluh Budiman Building located at the Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus as UPSI’s iconic monument while the special edition coins worth RM1 and RM10 also feature UPSI’s 100th-anniversary commemorative logo.

The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah and the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim, also graced the event.

Also present were Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff.

Md Amin in his speech said UPSI aimed to be among the top 150 universities in Asia and the world in the field of education by next year.

Established in 1922, UPSI was first known as the Sultan Idris Training College (SITC) and subsequently as Maktab Perguruan Sultan Idris (MPSI) in 1957; Institut Perguruan Sultan Idris (IPSI) in 1987; and finally upgraded to university status in 1997. – Bernama
