MCMC Bans Local “Dickheads” NFT Project

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is apparently censoring a local NFT project called Dickheads NFT, a collection of NSFW artwork featuring characters made up of the male appendage. The project is listed on NFT Pangolin, a new Malaysian marketplace launched by MyEG.

According to Tech in Asia, the agency ordered NFT Pangolin to delist Dickheads from the platform on 30 March after receiving complaints. However, as of writing, the collection is still listed on the site, with an NFT Pangolin spokesperson telling Tech in Asia that they are working closely with MCMC and the Dickheads NFT artist to resolve the matter.

The Malaysia-based artist, who has not been named, said the project will be hosted on OpenSea or SuperRare, an Ethereum-based marketplace. MCMC also managed to get the Dickheads NFT Twitter account suspended, though the artist has since created a new account.

This is the first known instance of the regulator banning or censoring NFTs in the country. It will be interesting to see if MCMC will also censor the controversial Monyet Istana collection that will be launched later today by political cartoonist Fahmi Reza. While it’s not yet known where the project will be listed, it could possibly debut on OpenSea, NFT Pangolin, or Pentas.io, another Malaysian NFT marketplace.
