Metal theft: Man arrested, tests positive for morphine

IPOH: Police arrested a 41-year-old man for allegedly stealing metal rods at electrical poles in broad daylight.

Ipoh district police chief, ACP Yahaya Hassan said the man was arrested at an unoccupied building in Manjoi near here Monday (Nov 29).

He said initial investigations revealed that the suspect has been stealing the metal rods around the Manjoi and Jelapang areas.

“He has 11 priors for various offences, including narcotics cases.

“His urine tested positive for morphine, and the suspect has been remanded for three days,” he said in a statement.

ACP Yahaya said they had come across two videos online under the Facebook accounts of “Acai D Raja” and “Info Santai Anak Utara” showing a man allegedly stealing the rods by the roadside, despite the person taking the video reprimanding him.

In the video, it shows the man, who came on a motorcycle, busy pulling down a rod near a housing area.

The man recording the video could be heard saying that if the suspect continued to do so, the WiFi connection there could be disrupted.

However, the suspect ignores his remark, and gets on his motorcycle, before the recording ends.

ACP Yahaya said a police report had been lodged over the alleged incident on Sunday (Nov 28) at 9.16pm at the Jelapang police station.

He thanked the community for providing information that led to the arrest of the suspect within hours.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
