We saw reports last year on Microsoft working on making a web version of its Xbox Cloud Gaming (previously Project xCloud) to skirt around Apple’s restrictions on getting into the iOS ecosystem. But prior to this, Microsoft did make a few interesting offers to the iPhone maker to loosen its requirements for individual games from the service. This includes offering a few AAA titles for the iOS platform.
More documents from the trial between Apple and Epic Games have revealed that Microsoft offered making individual apps to be submitted to the Apple App Store. But these will only serve as shortcuts of sorts. Launching them will in turn launch the primary streaming tech app. Xbox head of business development Lori Wright also offered to sweeten the deal by making AAA titles available on iOS this way.
When that didn’t work, Xbox reportedly offered to make every individual game app a streaming app. Ultimately, this was all shot down by Apple, which leaves us at where we are today.
Xbox Cloud Gaming CVP Kareem Choudry confirmed the details in a statement to The Verge. So while Xbox was opposed to Apple’s insistence of having every individual game on the cloud gaming service being a standalone app, it did try to compromise.
