NVIDIA Agrees To Reimburse Board Partners For Cancelled GeForce RTX 4080 12GB Packaging

NVIDIA has confirmed that it will compensate its board partners for the “unlaunching” of its GeForce RTX 4080 12GB cards. Specifically, it will reimburse those who have already made the boxes and packaging for the card, as well as pay for its repackaging.

The RTX 4080 12GB packaging reimbursement plan was confirmed by TechTuber Gamers Nexus (GN), who says that at least two partners will get their compensation from NVIDIA, for now. As for the already printed boxes, industry policy would mean that they will be collected and destroyed en masse, seeing how they will never see the light of day.

To be clear, neither GN nor the board partners it spoke to, clarified if the compensation for the RTX 4080 12GB would include other costs, such as labour.

It is likely that NVIDIA will move on, acting as if the RTX 4080 12GB never even existed in the first place. Well, okay, maybe it’ll acknowledge its existence now and then and in passing mention but let’s face it: acting as though the card never existed is going to be a tall order, considering the manner in the announcement for the card was made alongside the RTX 4090 and 16GB version of the card, which is still set to launch on 16 November.

For the uninitiated, NVIDIA gave the world of gaming a surprise late last week when it announced that it was cancelling the launch of the RTX 4080 12GB, saying that the card “was not named right” and admitted to the fact that having two versions of the same card was confusing. Specs-wise, the card would ship out with 12GB GDDR6X graphics memory running at 21Gbps, a 192-bit memory bus, 7630 CUDA Cores, and a base and boost clock of 2.32GHz and 2.61GHz, respectively. Much like the other two Ada Lovelace cards, it would also have access to 3rd generation Ray-tracing (RT) cores and 4th generation Tensor Cores, as well as the new DLSS 3.0 upscaling technology.

As for its renaming, it is looking highly likely that NVIDIA could possibly rebrand the RTX 4080 12GB as either a RTX 4070 Ti or RTX 4070, which in turn would match the initial rumours about the card, pre-launch. Fingers crossed, then.
