PETALING JAYA: Reopening of Malaysia’s borders will improve the country’s economy, especially in Johor, says Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Dr Wee said the nation’s transition towards endemicity alongside the reopening of its borders would allow Malaysians based in Singapore to return to Malaysia after two years of border closure.

“I would also like to thank all parties, especially those on duty at the nation’s borders, including public transport operators, who have ensured smooth travels today,” he said in a Facebook post Friday (April 1).

Earlier, Dr Wee said that from midnight until 4pm on April 1, a total of 2,835 Singapore-registered cars entered Malaysia through Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ).

He said the number of Singapore-registered vehicles entering Johor via the two checkpoints was expected to increase over the weekend, adding that traffic entering Malaysia was smooth following the government’s move to waive the RM20 road charge on Singapore-registered private vehicles until April 7.
