There are certain health features within Samsung Galaxy Watch models that are not yet available for Malaysian users even though the smartwatches already contained the necessary hardware. Among them are the ECG and blood pressure capabilities as they required approvals from the Ministry of Health (MoH) but that may change soon.

According to MoH’s Medical Device Authority Register (MDAR), the Samsung Blood Pressure App received approval for usage in Malaysia in mid-November. Registered under Samsung Malaysia Electronics, this means that the application was likely done by the company itself.

This is similar to what Huawei did for the Watch D which will receive its official Malaysian launch this week. As a comparison, Apple submitted its ECG app to the Medical Device Authority last year with the help of a third-party company called Nyprax Business Solutions and the feature eventually made its way to local Apple Watch owners in May 2021.

However, we are still not able to locate the Samsung ECG app in the database though. We have no knowledge if the company has actually submitted an application for the ECG app to MDA but there is no reason for Samsung not to do so, as both features are part of the big Samsung Health Monitor’s umbrella.

In case you wondering how Samsung Galaxy Watch’s blood pressure feature works without having an actual pressure cuff, the secret is the calibration process. In order to properly obtain blood pressure measurement with the supported Galaxy smartwatches such as Galaxy Watch Active2, Galaxy Watch3, Galaxy Watch4, and Galaxy Watch5, the user must first calibrate the app by entering the reading from an actual cuff-based blood pressure monitor into the app three times.

Naturally, the next big question would be when exactly Samsung Malaysia will roll out this feature to Samsung Galaxy Watch owners. This is something that only the company itself is able to answer and we have indeed reached out to Samsung Malaysia to obtain further information, so stay tuned.
