Images and specifications of an upcoming electric vehicle (EV) by smart have now surfaced online, thanks to a leaked Chinese vehicle homologation document. As seen from the badge situated on its back, the vehicle is known as the smart #3 (pronounced as “hashtag three”) and is revealed to be a couple-SUV model. Despite its designation, it is so far the second confirmed EV coming from the Geely-Daimler owned brand, with the first being the smart #1 that was officially launched earlier in April this year.

From the images, the supposedly upcoming model shares some similarities with the aforementioned EV, especially in terms of design language for its head and tail lights. However, the more obvious differences being the coupe-like roofline and larger size of the smart #3. In regards to the latter, the leaked document notes that the newer EV will measure 4.4 meters long, while a slightly longer 4.5 meters version also exists.

While most specifications of the smart #3 are still not known at this time, the homologation document mentions that the EV will be offered with two motor options: an entry level version with an output of 154 hp, and a performance-oriented version with 272 hp – both of which are actually the same powertrains featured on the smart #1. Additionally, it is listed that the onboard Lithium-ion battery is supplied by Xinwangda Electric Vehicle Battery Co Ltd.

Besides that, the paperwork also lists several optional equipment for the EV model, including  rear roof spoilers, wheels, as well as different front and rear bumpers. As for colour options, the leaked photos reveal the smart #3 will be available in white, cream and orange-black, among other possible offerings. Unfortunately, there are no clear images depicting the design of its interior.

Seeing that the new model has been certified by Chinese authorities, it might be long until smart officially announces it. However, there’s no indication of when a launch is to be expected, though there is a chance it may take place before the year ends.
