Teen swept away by strong currents while crossing river

KOTA KINABALU: A teenager was swept away by strong currents while crossing a river in interior Sook on Friday (Aug 5).

The 17-year-old, identified as Kenn Mohd Afiandar Angkorou, had been crossing the river with his father Afiandar, brother Kelfi and cousin identified only as Jawi, prior to the 7pm incident.

He has remained missing since.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Misran Bisara said they four were crossing the river at Borneon Timber Jalan Tulid, when strong currents suddenly hit.

“The three had managed to cross the river, but Kenn did not make it,” he said in a statement on Saturday (Aug 6).

Firemen only received a missing person’s report at around 3.30pm, Saturday due to logistical challenges.

Search operations were mounted and will continue on Sunday (Aug 7) morning.
